Air travel is the most convenient form of travel in the US. In about six hours you can travel from one coast to another coast. Most cities and even small towns have passenger air service. There is competition among major carriers and you can also avail air travel in very competitive rates. There are also some discount air carriers in the US. There are many travel agencies offering tickets and you can choose on your convenience like price, travel time, number of stops, etc.
Traveling by train in the US is relatively expensive. The national rail system, Amtrak has service to many cities. But they focus more on sightseeing tours than efficient intercity travel. Students and seniors can travel on discounts of 15%. Commuter trains also carry passengers to and from the suburbs of major cities. Amtrak provides many amenities and services that you cannot find in other modes of transport. You can see many scenic attractions if you are traveling by train.
Car or taxi is another option. In big cities like New York, Washington or Los Angeles, you can get a taxi easily. City-buses and in-city trains are also available in large cities. But in small and medium-sized cities, public transportation is thin. Except at airports, you cannot get a taxi immediately there, you may have to call for one and wait a half-hour or so to be picked up.
Intercity bus services are also there. Many small towns are connected with regional cities by bus. It is also very cheap compared to other transportation like train or plane. There are a number of bus operators in the US. Greyhound Bus Lines, a major operator, offers inexpensive daily bus service in the Midwest from their hub in Chicago to Milwaukee, Saint Louis, Indianapolis, Detroit, and Cincinnati. There are many small operators that offer discounted tickets for bus services between large East Coast cities particularly Washington D.C., New York City, Philadelphia and Boston.
There are also Recreational Vehicles that are large, bus-sized vehicles that include sleeping and living quarters. Renting an RV is an option, if you want to drive extensively within the US.
While traveling in US, you can communicate with others in English, the official language of the country. If you are thinking of food, there are plenty of restaurants you can find in all cities. Besides Barbeque, BBQ, or barbecue, Chinese food, Japanese sushi, Thai food, Fusion cuisine combines Asian ingredients and techniques with more traditional American presentation, Mexican food, and Indian food are available in most US cities and towns. With a rich tradition of immigration, America has a wide variety of ethnic foods; everything from Ethiopian cuisine to Laotian food is available in major cities with large immigrant populations.
