The Mexican Martyrs Of The 20th Century

As Bishops and Promulgators of the Causes of Beatification and Canonization of the Martyrs, shared the Glorious Resurrection of our Church through their willing deaths, our hearts felt as if they would burst. It was, as Mother Angelica says, "awesome!" But the Glorious Mysteries follow the Sorrowful. We had to walk the Way of the Cross; we had to share in the sadness, the abuse, the torture, the suffering - physical as well as spiritual - endured by the Martyrs; we had to look into the face of man's inhumanity to man. It made us want to reach out and touch our Priests and Religious, our brothers and sisters of the Laity who had given their yes to the last ounce of their blood; we needed to hug them, to hold them, to try to make it better. But we were grieving from man's viewpoint, not from God's. These dear brothers and sisters had been "washed in the blood of the Lamb". There was no more pain and suffering for them. They are basking in the Light of the Kingdom. They are interceding for those of us who have followed. And because of that, we have the motivation to share what we found when we researched their lives. Although we have written about Poland and her Martyrs, and those of Ireland, America, England, and Auschwitz, at this time we would like to bring you some Martyrs close to home, our neighbors to the south of us.

The beginning of the end - The Mexican Revolution

To look upon Mexico, and the Mexicans, as backward and different from us, is to make a major mistake and to learn nothing. The Mexico that rose from the ashes of the Mexican Revolution of 1810 was not the Mexico who was for 150 years, after Our Lady of Guadalupe came, one of the greatest nations in the world.

Ironically, the actions of a Priest, Miguel Hidalgo, who might have been well-meaning initially, brought about revolution! He began only wanting some equity for the Indians. The Priest was about social justice; what he accomplished was social uprising, against the wealthy landowners, and (possibly not part of his plan, in the beginning) against the Church. As we have said, over and over again: Social justice without Jesus is Judas revisited. We end up selling out our Lord, once more. This Priest may have had good intentions, but without God in charge, he had to turn against Him.

The people followed this Priest, believing he was speaking the Church. Farmers and peasants, without weapons other than pitchforks, knives and the like, rallied round Hidalgo, and marched on the towns and villages of Mexico. The force swelled to over a hundred thousand, at which point, Hidalgo lost control of his followers completely; it became a bloodbath. Hidalgo was not a military man; he became the dupe for ambitious men, who would use him for their own ends. Finally, he was killed, a year after his ill-begun revolution. And from that poor beginning, revolution upon revolution has continued. The Spanish regained control of the towns after Hidalgo was killed, but they never quite controlled the country again.

We went to Mexico

We had been looking for the final resting place of Blessed Miguel Pro for some years. We finally tracked down the church where a beautiful shrine has been built to the Martyr of the 1920's. December 1993, we left a week before our annual Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe begins. We wanted not only to be able to videotape Miguel's shrine, but we wanted to bring our pilgrims to it. For years, we have been looking for the place where he was executed. We finally found it. We knew it was off the main boulevard in Mexico City; where this brave and holy priest was martyred, today, a monument to greed stands - the National Lottery building. We got our driver to bring us there, and we kept walking around the building looking for a plaque designating the place where Miguel Pro had been executed. We couldn't find it. Our guide and friend, a Mexican, went inside the National Lottery building to ask if anyone knew where it was. Nobody there knew anything about it. But as we stubbornly walked around the building, searching, a guard on the other side of the street, in back of the National Lottery building, called us over. He pointed to the wall in back of him, which was almost completely covered by electric cables. There it was, about 8 by 12 inches. It said (I'm paraphrasing now), "Across the street from this place, at the beginning of the stairway, is the spot where Fr. Miguel Pro was executed on November 23, 1927." We stood there. It was a strange feeling. All he had to do was hide, to deny Christ and the Church; instead, on this spot Bl. Padre Pro, Martyr, raised a Rosary in one hand and the crucifix he was given on the day of his ordination in the other, blessed his executioners and cried out "Viva Cristo Rey! - Long live Christ the King!

In our book on the Martyrs, we wrote about the three children of Tlaxcala who were the first three Martyrs of the Western World; they were beatified with Juan Diego in 1991 (who has since been canonized). We had planned on traveling out to the state of Tlaxcala, solely to interview the priests who had worked on the Beatification of these three children.

But in November, 1992, as we were watching EWTN, which we do exclusively, we saw the Beatification of Twenty Five Mexican Martyrs, all of whom had been murdered during the persecution of the Church in the 1920's and 1930's. We were amazed at what we heard. Most of these were in their late 20's or early 30's. When we looked at their photos, they looked so young, barely more than children. Fifteen of them were graduates of the Seminary of Guadalajara. We went to the Seminary and interviewed some seminarians. We asked one of the young men, "Why are you here, to become holy?" At which he replied, "I am here to become a Saint!"

We contacted the priest who had finalized the work on the Beatification, and pushed it through to its successful completion, Fr. (now Bishop) Oscar Sanchez.

He set up appointments for us in every church or shrine to these twenty-five martyrs, possible. He found eyewitnesses to the Martyrdom of these priests. We found that our own Luz Elena's uncle Jose was an altar boy to two of the martyrs in Cuquio, Mexico, a small town outside of Guadalajara. We interviewed him, as well as his younger brother, Marcos Sandoval, Luz Elena's father, who was very young at the time, but remembered the events of the 1920's. We interviewed many of the people who had been alive during the Martyrs' lifetime.

We went to the ranches where these priests ministered, to the poorest villages in Mexico, and once, we actually found ourselves in a jungle, or a rain forest, outside of Tequila, Mexico, where the people still live in adobe huts, have no electricity, and wash their dishes in a brook; and their smiles were radiant. In the midst of this brush which no ordinary transportation could bring you, was the house where one of the priests, Blessed Toribio Romo lived and celebrated Mass underground, and where he was finally caught and executed by the soldiers.

There are many stories of pain and persecution, many efforts to rob the Mexican people of their God and Madre, Our Lady of Guadalupe, but the holy stubbornness quality that our Blessed John Paul II loved will live on.

We've said it from the beginning, and the Lord bears us out. In times of crisis, God sends us "Powerful Men and Women in our Church," God sends us Martyrs! God sent us Miguel Pro, not only for the Mexican people, but for God loving people everywhere, to let us know loud and clear that God is alive!

There are many messages in the story of our modern day Martyr, Miguel Pro. Perhaps the greatest lesson, the most important truth we will ever learn, is Blessed Miguel Pro's battle cry, the victory cry of Christians everywhere, for all the world to hear, "Vivo Christo Rey!" Long live Christ the King!

The History of Woodie (or Woody) Station Wagons

In their day, wooden bodied station wagons were work horses. Considered unattractive and strictly utilitarian, they were produced in low numbers. Then after a half century of production, they were gone, discontinued, largely because they were so difficult to manufacture and maintain. Yet today, they can sell for more than a house and are considered classic beauties.

Sometime in the late 19th century, a forgotten mechanic fastened a primitive engine to a horse drawn wagon creating the first horseless wagon. The details have been lost to history but from that humble beginning, a style of automobile was born, one that still exercises influence upon us over 100 years later.

Just into the 20th century, furniture makers began making "woodies" as a sideline to their businesses. They would purchase an automobile without a body, and build a body from wood. These custom vehicles were often set up like small buses and were commonly used by resorts to transport guest to and from railroad depots. They werent called woodies back then. Rather, they were known as "depot hacks". In the horse-drawn days, a "hack" was a wagon.

Some woodies went upscale and became favorites of the wealthy. Sometimes referred to as estate cars, they would gain popularity with "county gentlemen" who owned large rural estates.

Eventually auto manufacturers began producing their own versions. Ford introduced the first production woodie in 1929. Throughout the 30s most other manufacturers joined in, usually with very limited success, Some lesser known car makers only produced a prototype or two. The largest car compamy at the time, Chevrolet, waited until 1939 before they introduced their first woodie.

By then the vehicles had become known as "station wagons", a variation of the earlier name "depot hack", but was still a reference to train stations.

Woodies were never a profitable item for car makers. They were extremely labor intensive to produce; literally hand assembled. Ford bought a track of forest known as Iron Mountain in Michigan as a source for lumber, other makers simply purchased the lumber, or more often, had outside vendors manufacture the wood bodies.

Woodies were considered commercial vehicles; part of the truck line. They were advertised with pickups, delivery vehicles and other commercial workhorses. While families might occasionally end up owning station wagons, youd be more likely to see the local handyman driving one. Despite the obvious advantage for transporting kids, use of station wagons for family transportation was still years away.

With the passenger compartment being made completely of wood (including the roof which was covered with a waterproofed fabric), there were plenty of drawbacks. The cars tended to squeak as the wood joints aged and the wood needed constant refinishing much like a piece of furniture left outside. Despite constant care and attention, the wood was prone to moisture damage, discoloration and rot. And while no one ever performed any safety studies on woodies, it is easy to assume in a serious crash, the passenger compartment would splinter and break apart.

The automobile exploded into American society around the turn of the 20th century, bringing with it many practical problems that had to be solved. For example, the creation of, what one 1912 architect dubbed, a 'new kind of out-building'. Outbuildings were generally thought of as either barns in rural areas, or 'carriage houses' in urban areas. The carriage house was a place to keep the horse and buggy, the preferred method of quick transportation before the car became truly popular. It made sense to the early automobile owners to store their car next to the horse and buggy.

But one problem. Owners of cars back in the early 20th century were only those who could afford one- wealthy and influential families, for the most part. These high-class owners didn't want their brand new cars to reek of manure. They needed a less smelly alternative. At the outset, garages were more like one-leveled parking structures. You store more than one horse in a barn, typically. Why not do the same with cars? Garages were built large, some private and some public, and proprieters charged monthly fees for spaces. It was quite the lucrative business. But by 1910, there were too many cars for these garages to contain, and overcrowding led to skyrocketing prices and general dissastisfaction. So they brought it back to the 'carriage house' idea, building small horseless structures close to home. Garage is from the French word garer, (in Spanish, guarder), meaning, to guard, shelter, or protect. No one is quite sure how the garage finally received its name, but it became near-ubiquitous within a decade.

Early garage doors were just like barn doors, with side-hinged, large double doors and latches. Early garages also were more like what today we would call a shed- rough wood, nails falling out, creaky hinges, wide slats. Improvements were deemed necessary. Doors gained sliding tracks, and the garage became more versatile.

The invention of the modern folding garage door was necessitated by the fact that a standard-hinged door would require a much wider space in which to open- leading to absurdly large garages. When inventors finally figured out that a door could be made of several panels made to bend around corners and tuck into adjacent walls or ceilings, the modern garage door was born.

It would be many years, however, before electric and motor garage door openers would relieve families of the need to open the garage by hand.

The Freight Brokerage Business Basic Information and Licensing Requirements

Freight brokers are basically middle-man between the shipper, buyer or owner of the product and the trucking company that moves the freight. Freight brokers will accept an order for a load to be moved from the customer and arrange for the transportation of the goods by locating a carrier to move the load. Freight brokers revenues are generated by the freight broker simple paying the carrier less than what they are being paid by their customer, which then becomes the freight brokers "Margin" or profit.

This freight broker business model, for all intents and purposes, sounds simple but in actual fact, it is not. There are freight broker licensing factors that need to be considered to become a freight broker that is not always apparent when first looking at it.

Freight Broker Licensing

Before you can start your freight broker business and actually brokering freight, you need to become established with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association which licenses freight brokers. Although there are very little regulations that are specific to freight brokers, there are some basic requirements. These would include a Freight Broker Motor Carrier (MC) number. This freight broker MC number is fairly easy to acquire by providing your incorporation papers and paying the application fee of approximately $500.00. This will almost immediately get you a freight broker MC # that is in pending status. In order to remove the pending status from your freight broker MC, you will need to file a freight broker Surety Bond of $10,000.00. A surety bond is basically security for carriers that in the event they are not paid for a load from the freight broker, they have the right to file a nonpayment complaint against the freight broker bond and will receive all or a portion of their payment from the bonding company. The bonding companies will then go after the freight broker to top the bond back up to the required $10,000. There are a number of bonding companies that will look after this for you and their services vary. Some require freight brokers to front the $10,000 up front while others will finance you until the total is reached. Along with the freight broker surety bond, these companies will also set you up with a "Process Agents" in each state. These process agents are where the carrier with the nonpayment complaint, will file their issue against the freight broker.

If you are a looking at being a freight broker out of the Canadian market then the above licensing is not required. Canadian based carriers will not ask for MC information from freight brokers nor will they be looking for a surety bond. Each province will have its own specific licensing requirements for being a freight broker but these are normally limited to business registrations and nothing more. As a Canadian based freight broker, if you chose to broker freight that originates in the US and is destined for the US and the final stop, it would be strongly suggested that you go after the US based MC authorities. US based carriers will never take a load from a freight broker that does not have a MC number and surety bond.

The Four Types of Criminal Laws

Society is built upon carefully crafted laws. The founding fathers first started creating laws centuries ago, and since then the United States government has been expanding upon them. These laws keep up safe, civil, honest, and free from tyranny. As citizens, our government expects us to adhere to these decrees, not only for our own good, but for the good of the population as a whole. There are several types of criminal laws in place, all of which guide the American people to be safe and responsible citizens.

The first set of criminal laws, and perhaps the most fundamental, applies to the safety of people. These rules govern what we as a person cannot do to one another. Examples include: armed or unarmed assault, criminal harassment, lascivious exploitation, rape, and murder. All of these laws involve a direct threat to our fellow people and the consequences for breaking them are often severe. These are taken very seriously and there are a number of arrests each year for violating laws like this. When arrtested, the alleged criminal can face a number of charges, can be put on probation and can even be sent to jail. This is a whole other issue that will addressed in a future article.

The second form of laws involves transportation, and is known as traffic laws. Most people become aware of these laws when they first start learning to drive, as following them is crucial to avoid being pulled over and fined or possibly arrested. Some common examples of traffic laws involve: speeding, drunk driving, not wearing a seatbelt, operating an unregistered car or truck, and leaving the scene of an accident. In some cases, a court may even suspend a drivers license if they violate these laws too many times.

The third kind of criminal laws regard property. When a person intentionally damages or destroys another persons property, they may find themselves facing legal action. Property laws restrict people from littering, committing arson, stealing, vandalizing, trespassing, and any other similar crimes. Many times, when the law catches someone violating these rulings, that person will have to pay the property owner for the damages they inflicted. Additionally, the criminal may have to pay the court a fine or spend time in jail.

The fourth and final category of laws are ones that keep the community safe. Feeling safe in ones own home town or city is a cornerstone of a peaceful society. Community laws attempt to stop people from buying, selling, or using drugs, protesting without a permit or with aggression, concealing a weapon in public without permission, going on riots, and knowingly spreading false information about other people publicly. Should someone violate any of these laws, the legal system may sentence them to jail or prison, depending on the severity.

There are many laws in place to keep us and our neighbors safe. The government has worked carefully over the centuries to ensure these laws are fair and effective at stopping crime. Because not everyone accused of breaking these laws is truly guilty, the court has the final decision in each case. This is where things get a little messy. There are plenty of instances over time where innocent people have been proven guilty and guilty people have been let off because they are perceived to be innocent. This will forever be a battle in our legal system as we spend all of this money on lawyers, court caues and juries, but the judge still has the ultimate say. Hopefully, going forward, we as a society will be able to revert back to how our founding fathers handled everything and go back to a much simpler time where we did not have to deal with so much crud regarding laws, lawyers and court cases.
